We have been receiving a fair few spam emails lately, we like to keep a close eye to keep of what is going round to ensure we're in the loop with security. Here are a few examples,

HMRC

Here are two emails supposedly from HMRC, we received one after the other asking for us to open the file with our VAT return - A little strange, two emails come in with separate reference numbers.

Usually a VAT related email looks very different, and doesn't contain any prompt that an scan has been scanned before entry. We would post a photo of how it should look, but then that would be feeding information to people trying to get account details right?

PayPal

Here is a recent PayPal email, as featured on our Twitter @5wireHosting -

Using K9 Mail on an Android device allows you to easily see the headers of an email which helps identify potential threats or issues.

If I'm unsure about an email what should I do?

1. Do not open it, or if you have opened it and there are attachments, DO NOT OPEN them. Often Security Software, such as AVG, now provide real-time email scanning in programs such as Outlook, although this is a good deterrent to prevent spam emails, there is always a possibility one can slip through the net. Note: If you use TLS security on email connections to our servers, due to the nature of encryption you are unable to scan emails using AVG.

2. Check with the service in which you believe a spoof email has been sent. Once I have received the HMRC email, I already knew that it was a fake - But just to double check, it is worth checking your account as a just in case.

3. Increase SpamAssassin settings on cPanel, or increase the Junk E-Mail Options on your mail client. In Outlook this is fairly easy to do, on the Home tab, click Junk, and then Junk E-mail Options

Choose the level of junk e-mail protection you want, we recommend Low due to some privately operated email services having low settings, there is nothing worse than chasing a customer for an email when its sat in your Junk Box.
